Day 1 - Recap: Long and Sunny

We started off the morning with our send-off ceremony in Chesapeake, VA.  Soon after we were on the road.  We found ourselves going through the Hampton Roads area, winding our way through Carrolton and Smithfield, where we were treated to a rest area at an elementary school.  This was the coolest rest stop we ever had. The joy on the faces of the kids was amazing and it re-energized everyone.

We made our way to the James River Ferry, where we had to wait a bit. As I was riding through Williamsburg, I realized that the young Freshman at William and Mary were only in the fourth grade when I started doing this ride nine years ago.  Wow - time has flown.

The afternoon sun wasn't too hot, but it was sunny, it was beating down on us and we had to keep applying sunscreen.

A few wrecks, 30-odd people had to take a break for the day and end their day early, because it was such a long day in the saddle.  Hoepfully they can make it through Day 2, which is shorter, but it has more hills.

I need to get packing.  More from the road.
