After riding out of Hopewell, there were open roads, full of some small hills and a smaller amount of cars. There were many, many turns today – the goal was to stay off of as many major roads as possible.
Near Smithfield, the team started to pick up some traffic, the mood of the drivers became more urban.
Several bridges were crossed during the day. Some of them small some of them major drawbridges, that didn’t make the road traffic too happy.
I tried to take the team down a road which didn’t exist, it would have saved a few mile and was suppose to offer up great views of a lake, but the connector road was destroyed and the only way to get the bikes over there was to walk through a few acres of dried dirt.
The team did arrive to the hotel, no fan fare, no crowds cheering – but when they did come in they know that they just rode 260 miles of some tough terrain. There were some injuries and soreness. But with the rest day coming up, everyone knew they would be ready for the ride on Tuesday.
Some old friends were seen at the hotel, Team Minnesota and Texas were there. Friends from Pennsylvania and local Hampton Roads residents were also abound. It was good to catch up and talk with them.
